Gone Fishing

Fishing, whether on a large or small scale, has always been of interest to human beings, since it provides a means to get sustenance. Nowadays, fishing is even more interesting because it is featured on some intriguing reality shows. From individual fishermen to industrial fishing ships, each angle of the fishing game is covered.

Deadliest Catch

Deadliest Catch follows several different crab fishing ships that set out from Dutch Harbor every season to fish the waters of the Bering Sea. The icy waters make for quite the challenge, but the payout is often extremely high. The show follows the different issues which arise among crew members. Greenhorns, or rookie fishermen, get grief from the veterans. The captains get fed up with laziness and attitudes. Meanwhile, the crews try to get as many opilio crabs as possible. Sometimes, the payout is high enough for each crew member to take home $50,000 for two weeks or so of work. Some episodes feature information on the dangers of this job.

Swords: Life on the Line

Swords: Life on the Line follows a similar format as Deadliest Catch in that it focuses on different sword fishermen. However, the process of catching swordfish is different. Since these fish are huge, catching them poses several challenges. In the end, though, the rewards for catching the behemoth sea creatures are high.

River Monsters

River Monsters follows Jeremy Wade, a fishing enthusiast and biologist, on a quest to find fresh water monster fish. He examines the local lore of killer fish and then goes on a hunt to find these creatures. Often, he does find huge, even aggressive fish, but he rarely finds the killers of legend. Along the way, you learn details about various giant freshwater species, such as the Mekong catfish.

If you have ever spent a lazy day in the sun, fishing for dinner, you may be interested in these shows. However, they feature anything but lazy days spent fishing. These shows depict the struggles of fisherman and the seafood they harvest. Learn more about the world’s fish by watching these programs.
